Rates over totals.A pitcher's ERA tells you what happened behind him as much as what he did. Strikeout rate, walk rate and batted-ball quality describe the pitcher himself, and they stabilise on a fraction of the sample — which is what makes them usable in August rather than in October.
Workload is a data point, not a footnote. A bullpen's best arm is worth nothing on the night he is unavailable, and that fact is knowable hours before first pitch. Pitch counts over the last three days and days since the last appearance are carried on every reliever.
Lineups change the picture, so we watch for them. Splits by pitcher hand only mean something once you know who is actually hitting. That is why lineups are checked every two minutes through the afternoon instead of once in the morning.
