His ERA and his SIERA disagree by 0.84. The ERA is the harsh one — he has pitched better than his run prevention shows. SIERA is built from strikeouts, walks and contact, so it settles far faster than ERA does.
Neither his xFIP (0.32 between sides) nor his strikeout rate (3.8 points) moves much depending on the batter’s hand. That is worth knowing too: the read on his night has to come from somewhere else.
| xFIP | K% | BB% | K-BB% | HR/9 | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| vs left-handed batters | 3.72 | 22.9 % | 7.3 % | 15.6 % | 0.99 |
| vs right-handed batters | 3.40 | 26.7 % | 4.9 % | 21.8 % | 1.75 |
xFIP rather than SIERA by hand: FanGraphs does not publish SIERA in its splits. The two describe the same thing and correlate at about 0.95.
